About us

Barton Marine is New Zealand’s leading marine retail specialist. We sell quality marine products from our store at 80 Cable Street in Wellington and online. We stock everything for sailing and boating, fishing and safety. We specialise in pulleys, rope, paint, fibreglass, fishing, wet weather gear and life jackets. Barton Marine was established in 1965 and you can draw on our experience and expertise when searching for the right product.

The Team
Elliot Cree - Owner
Elliot grew up sailing from an early age and moved through all the dinghy classes in Wellington. His experience lead him to win multiple local, regional and national regattas. Elliot graduated from Otago University with a degree in Physical Education majoring in Outdoor Education. From there he started working at Barton Marine and coaching after work and in the weekends. Now, a husband, father of two and business owner, Elliot enjoys every possible bit of time with the family and takes pride in running the business to the best of his ability. He speaks passionately about his supportive customers and is always excited about what the future brings.

Brian "Ginger" Richards - Fishing Specialist
Ginger, as he is commonly known as, is a fishing fanatic. He has caught almost every species of fish around NZ plus plenty in Australia and in the Islands. Ginger is also well known for opening up the recreational fishing area of the trench in the Cook Strait. Pulling in record sized bass, puka and bluenose there is not much Ginger doesn’t know about fishing. With all the experience in using the gear, Ginger is now regarded as one of New Zealands best rod and reel repairer. From custom built rods to reel repairs of any nature, you are in good hands.

Our History

Hugh Barton along with Charles Evison and Vernon Small began Barton Marine Ltd on 5th July 1965. In 1971 Phil Hartley joined the Barton Marine team as a director and in 1980, Mike Calkoen and Mic Pinkney were also appointed directors. With the opening of the Napier branch, manager Richard Choat became director in 1987. A year later Tony Crew was also appointed director. It wasn't until 2019 when Elliot Cree became sole director to bring the company to where it is today.
